Nurit Weitz, participant of  2007 SABF,  shared with me the information about the workshop “SCIENCE, ENGINEERING AND PRODUCTIVE ENTERPRISE” that will be held on October 16th as part of the activities related to the World Congress and Exhibition “ENGINEERING 2010–ARGENTINA“.

The workshop is organized by CAI (Argentine Center of Engineers), CARI (Argentine Council for International Relations), ISTIC (UNESCO International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre), WFEO (World Federation of Engineering Organizations), UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), the MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS of the Republic of Argentina, and coordinated by Pablo Bereciartua (President of YPEB Forum).

**OBJECTIVES AND QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED
**
a. The role of Science, Engineering and Governments in R&D promotion for and in the industry and services (productive enterprises).

Objective: to examine models and experiences to encourage the participation of Science, Engineering and Governments in the development of R&D activities (Research and Development) for and in the industry and services.

b. The role of engineers in the creation of technology-based new enterprises.

Objective: to examine models and experiences to encourage the participation of Engineering and engineers in the creation of technology-based new enterprises.

c. Engineers’ education and their relation with the production sector.

Objective: to examine models and experiences to encourage changes in engineers’ education oriented to promote the role of engineers in R&D activities for and in the industry and services, and in the creation of technology-based enterprises.

RESULTS

a. To make a summary of the contributions in terms of evaluations of models and practices, including successful and unsuccessful experiences and the conclusions of authors and the organizing committee.
b. To develop a set of ideas and concrete proposals for future initiatives which are likely to be implemented in contexts such as that of Argentina and in other developing countries.
c. To publish and distribute a document containing the studies which were carried out, the agreements reached and the concrete proposals to be implemented.

WORKSHOP ORGANIZATION AND STRUCTURE

*Authors and collaborators: *Main authors will be invited to write papers about all the aforementioned topics or some of them. Prior to the Workshop, preliminary conclusions will be prepared taking into account the submitted papers and the contributions of other collaborators. Workshop participants will receive a CD copy of the submitted and analyzed material.

*Audience: *Around 50 participants are expected to attend the Workshop. Besides the authors of “White Papers” and the members of Organizing Committee, attendees will comprise:

• A group of distinguished foreign engineers, who will participate in the World Congress “Engineering 2010 – Argentina”, will be chosen and invited once the attendees to the Congress are confirmed.
• A group of Argentine participants who represent the community of scientists, engineers, businessmen and public officers, interested in the topic and with knowledge of it.
• **A group of young engineers or advanced engineering students (if you’re interested in participating in the workshop please send your CV to talleristic2010@gmail.com). **

*Workshop Structure: *The Workshop will include three sessions (from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.), with presentations of the documents by their own authors, in front of an audience which will have the possibility of making comments and questions to the lecturers. This activity will take place in the morning of Saturday Oct-16tyh. In the afternoon, the Organizing Committee, together with the authors of the “white papers”, will write down the conclusions and suggestions arising from these papers, the contributions made by guest collaborators, and the interaction during the workshop. The conclusions and suggestions will be summarized and introduced to three chapters of the World Congress “Engineering 2010 – Argentina”: the “Young People Forum” and the Thematic Chapters: “Engineering Education for Sustainable Development” and “Engineering Professional Practice”.
