Why those wimpish Brazilians are catching up with Argentina’s racier economy

My dad sent me this interesting article from The Economist.

After reading this article it seems obvious why development in Argentina is not working. A lot of policies taken by the government are aimed towards preventing short term consequences, but they are not looking into the future. What type of country are they leaving to us?
When you start searching about this kind of matter, you realize that everything could change, how? Only changing the kind of decision makers we have now ruling our country. Is it possible? I hope more honest and ethical people are being raised, I’m hoping our generation won’t repeat past mistakes… hope is just the starting point, from there, we need real actions. As a member of the SABF staff, we are trying to make a difference, I think, by getting involved. Maybe it seems utopist and adolescent, but in my opinion, that’s the only way to make good things happen.

Fortunately, there are some countries in South America which understood the importance of vision and they are building their future, such as Brazil or Chile. When all Latin-American countries will be pulling in the same direction?

  1. I agree with what you say, Valeria, and trully hope the young people feel the neccesity, the urge to start getting involved in what happens every day in our country and our world.
When we encounter a problem, we have two possibilities: complain about it (which is what we often do), or do something about it, anything is better than nothing, no matter how small it may be.
I hope the SABF helps in making us, the young, realize that the second option is the one we should take!

FOA, good article. I’m actually very interested in Brazil, its economy and the relation with our country.

It called my attention that our GDP growth is so large and maintained during this past years. I wasn’t aware of the dimension.

I share the vision of an Argentina that is not thinking in the long run, and pursues short-terms objectives. However, we must take a look upon the “short-history” of the past.

This is not the first time that we affront such a situation. Instead, I was kind of hoping (but not wishing..) this crisis to come. We all knew that soon or late, something was going to happen.

That is because of the economic cycles that we go through every seven or ten years.
During 2002 and 2007, we’ve been in rise (ascenso). This year, with the country-side conflict, we arrived to the peak (auge). Normally, when you are on top, there’s no way to go but down. We are supposed to fall into recession (recesión) in order to affront the reactivation (reactivación). This instance is a hard crisis that will be really hard to the majority of population.

Each part of the economic cycle has particular profiles and tendencies when it comes to investment level, rent, inflation rate, growth, etc.

I do understand that in this beautiful country (i mean, i do like it) things are not the way they supposed to be. But i also like the idea of that there’s some predictability in the behavior of economic levels.

The administration that our politics are giving us is one that tries to avoid the falling down that we must face because of the cycle nature. That’s why the economy is warming up, we have high rates of inflation, and the figures are going out of the hands.

Sadly, we must follow the cycle.
Happily, we can make the fall softer by being prepare for the situation.
How? Well, that’s hard. I’ve just realized of the commitment I’ve implicitly assumed when I’ve decided to reply the post!!! lol…

Pay attention. During rise, the aggregated demand growths. The public and private expense do it as well. There’s a lot of money around and probably there will be some inflationary effect.
WHAT TO DO? Save! Invest. Buy properties (houses, apartments, etc). Do not sell any capital goods (bienes de capital) cause the will revalue very soon. Most of all, save for later. And why not, enjoy.

During recession, the economy is very weak. In our case, we couldn’t evey but a Coke since it came in PET bottles and the PET was imported. An other example is the prices of diapers. What to do? We all have to remind the glass bottle. And some of us (my parents actually) thought of the old rubber diapers.
WHAT TO DO? Here’s the hard part. I mean hard cause it does not depends on us. We should in the firs place use what we’ve saved before (if…). luckily, you had the chance of save, invest and even study for being more educated to act the best way possible.
But on the other hand (this is my dad’s idea) the economic system must be stronger. We must produce the articles that we’ll consume. Basics. Diapers, food, clothes, shoes, cars. Not talking of technology, luxury, etc. It’s about being an independent economy (since we are now defenseless and vulnerable). I’m talking about directives. They are in charge of this change.

that’s how we must build a stronger economy, more durable, stable, long-run thought.
We = me, you, they, us, government, politics, teachers, students, housewife, professionals, workers, etc, etc, etc.
