Leveraging Business for Social Change

Bruce Cahan, speaker of 2009 SABF, sent us this exciting event to share with you. It’s a competition organized by Ashoka Changemakers and Artemisia with the aim to search for global model initiatives and ideas that help build the emerging field of social business. Both organizations believe social business is a powerful engine for serving vulnerable and low-income communities by delivering the critical goods and services they need to improve their lives and lift themselves from poverty.

In order to participate, you must submit a social business models that sparks profound transformation in the way social businesses achieve financial viability and scale up the reach and impact of social business initiatives. They are looking for initiatives that can scale up to improve millions of people´s quality of life. The Jury will evaluate innovation, social impact and sustainability.

By registering your initiative in the challenge’s website you will compete for a financial support of U$S 5000. Besides the cash award, this challenge provides very interesting opportunities as: to be visible to many stakeholders related to the theme, receive feedback about your initiative, learn about others, connect with colleagues who are developing social businesses around the world and vote for your favorites.

The inscription period for SABF 2010 is over!

Yesterday, May 9th, the inscription period for the 6th edition of SABF ended. We would like to share our happiness for achieving once more, thanks to the effort of the organizing team and the delegates, to pass the number of applicants from previous editions. This year we have received more than 500 essays from nearly 60 countries from all over the world.

In the next few weeks we will communicate with every single applicant in order to inform them the results.

We thank all of you for your collaboration and for the interest you’ve had demonstrated during the last period of time.

We wish you lot of luck and hope to see you in August!

Sustainable Businesses: A Global and Feasible Solution?

We would like to share with you all one of the secondary topic which is related with the main topic of this 6th edition: “Boosting our Actions in the New Decade”.

This topic is particularly focused on how to carry out sustainable business in a region as complex as South America. Two possible approaches to sustainable businesses are Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Triple Bottom Line (TBL), which are based in recognizing the company as a social actor that is capable of responding for the economic, social and environmental impact of its acts in the long run.

Three pillars identify them: a fair and beneficial practice for the community and region in which the business is settled (people), a positive, or at least harmless, impact on the environment (planet) and to take into consideration profit as the “real” economic value created by the company including the costs in human and natural capital as well as the social and environmental benefits in the surroundings (profit). We are still waiting for your essay!

There is one week left to apply for SABF 2010 and we are keen to receive more applications from around the world to make SABF, once again, an incredible experience. Remember that you have time until May 9th to upload or modify your essay. Below, you can find more information that has been already provided.

For this edition, something special for the 100 selected participants.

In the SABF’s sixth edition, a set of student-given workshops has been incorporated to the agenda. It will be a space for participants to share their ideas with their peers and debate them on a level ground. The essays, which will be presented by their respective authors, will be selected by a careful process including not only the SABF’s independent judges but also the Speakers Department and the SABF Board of Members.

Help finding financial assistance for your travel expenses

There are different ways of getting financial aid for the transportation to Buenos Aires. We encourage you to look for your own way of sponsorship through universities, companies, student foundations, airlines or embassies, for example. The SABF Organising Team will provide you with all the assistance you may need in order to get funds. How do I participate?

In order to participate, you should enter to the online application form, and complete your personal information and upload your essay (between 1200 and 1600 words) about one of the secondary topics: Sustainable Businesses: A Global and Feasible Solution?, Synergy: The Road to a Bigger Impact in Society, Citizen Participation: Assuming an Active Role in Change.

Do not forget that you will be able to modify your essay until the closure of the application period. We invite you to read some of the essays written by former participants.
